How to handle shared custody when one parent travels for work

On Behalf of | Feb 26, 2026 | Child Custody

When your job requires frequent travel, it can be difficult to manage meaningful time with your children. You want to be as present as possible in your children’s lives, but it is difficult. The good news is that there are ways to work around your business travels so that it does not prevent you from having meaningful parenting time.

Match your parenting schedule to your travel

If you’re consistently away every first and third week of each month, it makes sense to have the children during the second and fourth week when you’re home. Summer breaks and school holidays are another opportunity to have longer and uninterrupted time together. The key is to build something that reflects how your life actually operates. Tennessee parenting plan law provides the flexibility to make arrangements that make sense for your family.

Be transparent about your schedule

Most shared custody and scheduling challenges are resolved through honest and open communication with a co-parent. Share your travel schedule with your co-parent as far in advance as possible. This helps them plan ahead and avoid last minute disappointment of your children. If it’s possible to skip or reschedule a trip, do so. This shows that you prioritize your children above anything else.

Keep in touch during trips

Establish regular video calls with your child, try to help with their homework remotely and encourage them to update you with their school events and accomplishments. Even if you are not physically present, let your child feel that you are available emotionally and want to stay involved in their activities.

No matter how busy or how far you are from your children, your travel-intensive job doesn’t have to conflict with active parenting. If you plan carefully and communicate openly, you can make arrangements that fit your work schedule and keep you connected to them.
